CONFRATERNITIES TOUR

Amsterdam, Grimbergen, Leut en Dendermonde are the places where graindelavoix will take the public literally by the hand. At different spots the singers perform a program on late medieval confraternities and their practices. The architecture transforms into a space with different affective zones, centered around compositions by Ockeghem, Obrecht, Josquin, Compère and La Rue. Koen Broos designed the lighting for a program that already thrilled the audiences of Antwerp and Ostend.

Two elements feed this new program around Bach and earlier repertoires: De Arte Combinatoria by Leibniz next to Bach’s bed and his approach of the motet, an old-fashioned genre used mostly for commemorations and funeral occasions. The first points at a hidden but continuous line of musical complexity paralleled by a philosophical tradition ending with Leibniz and going back to medieval, scholastic theories of combinatory complexity and performative memory; the second points at the recycling and survival of pathosformulas developed in the Franco-Flemish polyphonic tradition and revived by Bach. Invited by KunstFestspiele Herrenhausen, graindelavoix reconnects Bach’s motets with works by Stoltzer, Gombert, Cipriano de Rore, Ockeghem, Josquin and the ars subtilior to experience the operative modus of musical memory.

With Anne-Kathryn Olsen, Patrizia Hardt, Razek François Bitar, Albert Riera, Andrés Miravete, Marius Peterson, Adrian Sîrbu, Tomàs Maxé, Joachim Höchbauer, Arnout Malfliet, Björn Schmelzer (dir).
