MAfestival 2016 is dedicated to Erasmus’s Praise of Folly. In this satirical treatise, humankind is mercilessly derided by the goddess of Folly. When the work first appeared in 1511, many took it personally. The resulting controversy found an echo after the recent attacks on Charlie Hebdo. How far can satire go? Even today, the question remains unanswered. In the trail of Erasmus’s spokeswoman, the MAfestival weaves a web of associations with folly.

MAfestival 2016 is opgedragen aan Erasmus’ Lof der Zotheid. In dit satirische traktaat neemt Vrouwe Zotheid de mens genadeloos op de korrel. Toen het werk in 1511 verscheen, voelden velen zich aangesproken. De controverse van toen kreeg een dramatische echo na de aanslagen op de redactie van Charlie Hebdo. Hoe ver kan satire gaan? Anno 2016 zijn we er nog steeds niet uit. In het spoor van Erasmus’ verrassend actuele lofrede weeft het MAfestival een web van associaties met de zotheid.

PRODUCTIONS OF INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIM
No one is more qualified to kick off this festival edition than Don Quixote, Cervantes’s legendary hidalgo who imagines himself a knight-errant. The eponymous opéra comique by Joseph Bodin de Boismortier is in good hands with Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet and narrator Stefaan Degand (-> ALLmusic) . Accademia Bizantina and Ottavio Dantone conclude this delirious edition of the MAfestival with Handel’s oratorio Belshazzar. A production of international acclaim, featuring renowned soloists such as Thomas Walker, Christophe Dumaux and Rosemary Joshua.

MELANCHOLY, HEARTBREAK & MADNESS
Intense emotions take centre stage in melancholy songs by Dowland, in Handel’s cantata Delirio amoroso and in several “mad songs” by Purcell, Blow and their contemporaries. Ensembles such as Imago Mundi, Arcangelo and Tictactus immerse themselves in these repertories. Madness can also permeate musical forms. For instance, the mannerist ars subtilior buzzes with extreme rhythms and sensuous melodies. And La Folia plays a leading part in this festival edition too.

OVER THE EDGE
MAfestival in Lissewege
Following the motto “Over the edge”, the concert day in Lissewege erases the boundaries between folk and baroque, religious and secular repertory. Leonardo García Alarcón and his Cappella Mediterranea, amongst others, highlight the subversive power of carnival and the commedia dell’arte.

VÉLO BAROQUE, COMPETITION, FRINGE
The festival is rounded off again by the musical cycle tour Vélo Baroque. The renowned International Competition Musica Antiqua focuses on pianoforte. Young, professional ensembles take the stage in a series of free Fringe concerts. In addition, the programme offers several lectures, courses and activities for children.

Niemand kan deze waanzinnige festivaleditie beter openen dan Don Quichot, Cervantes’ legendarische edelman die zich een dolende ridder waant. De gelijknamige opéra comique van Joseph Bodin de Boismortier is in goede handen bij Le Concert Spirituel, Hervé Niquet en verteller Stefaan Degand (-> ALLmusic). Accademia Bizantina en Ottavio Dantone besluiten een delirische editie van het MAfestival met Händels Belshazzar. Een internationale topproductie met gerenommeerde solisten als Thomas Walker, Christophe Dumaux en Rosemary Joshua.

De tijdloze dans La Folia speelt een hoofdrol in deze festivaleditie.

OVER THE EDGE
MAfestival in Lissewege
Net als de beste satire gaat de concertdag in Lissewege zich te buiten aan grensoverschrijdend gedrag. Onder het motto Over the edge sneuvelen bakens tussen folk en barok, geestelijk en profaan repertoire. Onder andere Leonardo García Alarcón en zijn Cappella Mediterranea plaatsen er de subversieve kracht van carnaval en de commedia dell’arte in de schijnwerpers.

VÉLO BAROQUE, WEDSTRIJD, FRINGE E.A.
De muzikale fietstocht Vélo Baroque is opnieuw het orgelpunt van het festival. De gerenommeerde Internationale Wedstrijd Musica Antiqua focust op pianoforte. Tijdens de gratis Fringe-concertreeks krijgen jonge, professionele ensembles een podium. Daarnaast staan ook opnieuw verschillende lezingen, cursussen en activiteiten voor kinderen op het programma.
