Musical discoveries of MAfestival 2018

ADAMO ED EVA
Trouble in paradise
On August 6th, the famous baroque ensemble il gardellino will present the modern premiere of oratorium Adamo ed Eva by Josef Myslivecek, a composer from the 18th century.

Conductor Peter Van Heygen is really enthusiastic: ‘This compositor may be virtually unknown today, but from 1765 to 1780, this Bohemian headed all the opera charts in Italy. Whoever discovers this well-kept secret, will be mesmerized by Myslivecek’s irresistible melodies. I am so honored to be able to bring this work in Premiere in Bruges, with the passionate musicians of il gardellino and an excellent cast with top soloists.’

IN MY END IS MY BEGINNING
Reflections of Mary Stuart
On Friday August 10th Lore Binon becomes Mary Stuart, against the backdrop of a brand-new video by Anouk De Clercq which gauges the shifting shapes of the female identity, with music from Giacomo Carissimi, Robert Schumann, Gaetano Donizetti and Robert Zuidam. An intimate and groundbreaking recital by Sofie Vanden Eynde and her ensemble Imago Mundi.

The Theaterkrant wrote after the premiere: ‘This creates a completely organic whole of modern, romantic and renaissance music, excellent. (…) The real star of the evening is Lore Binon. In what style and in which registry she sings, her voice is always pure, full-bodied and expressive. Breathtaking. ‘ * * * * *

MINNE
Hadewijch revisited
In this unique project, created for MAfestival, An Pierlé and Psallentes meet on the crossroads of their musical universes. Together they create a timeless soundscape, inspired by the love poetry of the 13th-century mystic Hadewijch. Scraps of Gregorian flirt with pristine pop songs; early polyphony merges into improvisation.
